About me
Hello! My name is José Bárria. I am 22-year-old Software Engineer with a strong passion for chess.
I have been playing chess since I was 4 years old and started competing in chess tournaments at 10,
having played in countless tournaments ever since. There have been many memorable moments throughout
my journey, and now, 13 years later, I am finishing my Msc in Software Engineering and Computer Science
at Instituto Superior Técnico - Lisbon, while trying to reach the highest chess honor possible -
the Grandmaster title.
About 6 years ago, around the time of the pandemic, I also started teaching chess online. I've had quite
some teaching experience already, having taught lots of players, including national champions.

Novelty Hunter New!
Searching for novelties in chess is some serious grunt work. You have to manually go through game after game, looking for interesting moves, and it just takes too much time. So I came up with the idea of creating Novelty Hunter. This is a very simple open-source tool that hastens your search for the next move that will make you win a quick game, or maybe just find something new and interesting to add to your repertoire. Its core revolves around calculating a rarity score and an interest score for rare moves in a game. You can find more info here.
Find Rare Moves
Upload a pgn file and it will find rare and (hopefully) interesting moves for you.
What makes a move rare?
To decide if a move is rare I take into consideration how many times the move was played vs how many times the most popular move was played and how many games there were before and after the move.
What makes a move interesting?
Here I consider how late the rare move was played, the game result and the engine's evaluation. I used Stockfish 18 Lite and considered the difference in evaluation between when the move was played and 5 moves later.
